Our Services

Lost and Found

There is nothing worse than realizing your best friend is missing or lost. We maintain a book with listings of lost and found pets in hopes of reunification. Should your pet become lost or missing, please call the Humane Society at 315-946-3389
or email us at
HSWC@waynehumane.org.

Adult Companion Program

In an effort to provide pet companionship to older adults, the Humane Society will match up cats and dogs age 3 and older with residents age 50 and older. The Adult Companion program pays the up-front costs associated with obtaining a Shelter companion animal. This program not only gives an older adult the chance to have the companionship of a pet, but also provides a loving home to an older Shelter animal.

PEt Surrender

Humane housing for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens whose owners no longer can care for them.

Finding Pets a Home

Adoption opportunities. Centralized services to help homeless and stray animals find new and loving homes.

Responsible pet ownership instruction. Families are assisted with choosing a pet appropriate to their circumstances; this also helps reduce the number of unwanted pets.

Education

Responsible pet ownership instruction. Families are assisted with choosing a pet appropriate to their circumstances; this also helps reduce the number of unwanted pets.

Community Education presentations and public education.

Spay & Neuter

A Spay Neuter Incentive Fund (SNIF), in cooperation with Wayne County area veterinarians, to assist families who cannot afford the full cost of spaying or neutering their pets.

Adopting a Senior Dog or Cat

5 years ago that man made a decision to take you for a ride and dump you, in the middle of nowhere, no compassion, no love and without a care of where you could end up or what could happen to you. You were 8 years old then, part of another family, now torn away from everything that was familiar to you, lost and scared, waiting for the man to come back, but he didn’t.

Luckily you were found and brought to the shelter. My family was not expecting to get another dog, but when we saw the gentleness in your eyes and the way you interacted with our brand new granddaughter, it was apparent that you had a gentle soul. We decided that we were going to be your forever home, the family that you could live the rest of your life with, and have no fear that you would ever be abandoned again. You fit right in immediately, laying down in the living room, just like you had been there the previous 8 years. You knew you were home.

Your happy personality, your want to always be around people, and the always wagging “nubby” tail was bound to put a smile on anyone’s face. You really just wanted to be everyone’s best friend. You knew the sounds of our cars when we pulled in the driveway, and that you got a big bowl of food every morning and night. There was never a time when you had to warm up to anyone, as soon as someone walked through our door, you were their friend for life. When we walked into the vet’s office, you knew it was time. You were tired, and your eyes had lost their usual spark. The cancer, no matter what we tried, was just too much. We laid you down and told you everything would be OK. We told you we’d be OK, though I’m not sure we really believed it ourselves.

To the man that so callously discarded you 5 years ago, please know that I have held you in contempt for a long time. Yesterday we put our dog down, you weren’t there, but I thought of you. He lived the life that you should’ve given him in the first place. Your selfish act resulted in one of the happiest times in my family. You gave us one of the best gifts that anyone could have ever given us. Diesel made us better. See you again buddy, we will love you forever. While the reasons are varied, death in the family, new baby, moving, etc. The shelter typically has senior dogs and cats available for adoption. No fault of their own, senior animals can wait far longer than others to find their forever home. Please, take a look at the older animals in the Shelter, the ones that deserve to live out their golden years with a compassionate and caring family.

We Need Your Help!

We can’t do it without you! The Humane Society of Wayne County is funded only through memberships, fees, donations and fund raisers. The important services that we provide are made possible because of the support that we receive from our members and contributors.
